EPIC IMAGE QUALTIY - FUJI X-TRANS SENSOR

I remember (from about 30yrs ago!) a great edition of one of the popular photography magazines in the UK, in which they'd given 6 very well known fashion/editorial photographers a small budget for props etc, freedom to use whatever lighting they wanted, a completely open brief, and asked them to produce a photograph 'good enough for the cover'. The only condition was that the shot must be taken on what was probably the cheapest camera on the market at the time - a ' Cosmic Symbol '. The results were astonishing - six very different but equally brilliant images. Each of the photographers had found a way to take advantage of something that most people would regard to be a weakness in the camera - soft focus, no shadow detail etc etc. The winning shot was taken at night from a bridge, in the rain, looking down upon a (set-up) crime scene with two NY cops attending to a very glamorous looking murder victim: very high contrast black and white, exaggerated because of the reflections of lights in puddles etc. The graininess of the film, the roughness of the lens, the theatre of the set, all combined to produce something amazing and atmospheric. But it would never have got past a pixel-peeping test.

Having said all that, thank goodness that we all don't have to work with Cosmic Symbols.
