Re: Did you tell Sony you don't know how to focus?

If I can choose between your crappy pseudo test and a professionnal one, I would prefer

the A99 dPr test http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sony-alpha-slt-a99/22

i don't know if you actually watched any of their professional sample videos, but they show the exact same softness, lack of detail, and fuzziness that we have all been complaining about. good to see that the "professional" videos are lacking in the same way that the "crappy pseudo tests" are, and that they have your approval as being representative of the a99's capabilities.

  • Pleasing metering and white balance results

nobody said this was a problem.

  • 1080p60 video specifications

nobody was complaining about that. in fact that was a feature we all liked.

  • Ability to output uncompressed HD video to an external recorder or monitor

nobody was complaining about that. in fact that was a feature we all liked.

[...] The A99 gives very good image quality, particularly so at high ISO sensitivities, placing it among the best performing full frame cameras we've seen to date [...]

nothing to do with video mode. and as far as high iso video 5d mk3 beats it easily. but again nobody was complaining about that (much).

[...] video performance of the A99 offers several advantages over its peers and none more apparent than its phase-detection AF system. Focus acquisition in video mode is brisk and object tracking can actually be an effective tool for subjects moving at slow to moderate speeds in a consistent direction.

a wise person once told me that auto-focus was for amateurs and that proper technique is manual focus only. right? so this is not something we should bother considering.

And Sony's well-regarded focus peaking option is among the best options we've seen yet for manual focus.

nobody was complaining about that. in fact that was a feature we all liked.

Videographers, while perhaps lamenting the lack of magnified live view and histogram display will be pleased to see an uncompressed video over HDMI option as well as mic and headphone inputs along with an optional XLR mic adapter kit [...]

nobody was complaining about that. in fact that was a feature we all liked.

[...] While the ability to shoot uncompressed video at 60 fps may grab more attention, the full-time phase-detection AF of the A99 clearly sets it apart from its peers, producing the most effective AF system we've seen in a DSLR-style camera.

a wise person once told me that auto-focus was for amateurs and that proper technique is manual focus only. right? so this is not something we should bother considering.

And while video professionals are likely to opt for manual focus, enjoying Sony's focus peaking capability, there's little doubt that a fast, accurate AF holds appeal for still photographers wanting to get the most out of their video clips without having to re-train as a video focus puller. [...]

i should tell them that they need to post a correction for that as michel j says anybody even thinking about autofocus in video needs to go back to technique school. so this is not a positive aspect worth considering. right?

[...] The image quality of the A99's video output is very good, though as with any DSLR you'll need to keep an eye out for subjects that induce aliasing artifacts like moiré patterning [...]

the 5d mk3 (while having other problems) doesn't have the same aliasing and moire issues, so the statement "any dslr" needs a qualifier there. moire and aliasing is something that has been raised as an issue and it's good to see that dpr aren't deliberately ignoring it like some commenters here.

Conclusions - cons [of dPreview about A99's video IQ]

  • [... empty]
  • [... empty]
  • [... empty]

What else?

[...] some moiré a tad [...] as with any DSLR [...]

again not with "any dslr", as the 5d mk3 has shown great improvement in this area and outperforms the a99.

Gold Award 84%

Dear friends, I let you conclude concerning all this permanent bashing from Shield3 & PhotoChris.
