Non-TTL Auto mode works with all cameras. I even used my FL36 this way with an old early-1970's mechanical rangefinder (also a Ricoh), and all exposures were spot on.
In this mode exposure is controlled by the flash itself, based on input from the sensor on the front of the flash unit. All you need to do is switch the camera to M mode, select aperture value and ISO that make sense and make sure the flash is configured to use the same values. With the X10, good settings to start with (indoors) would be 1/60", f/4.0 and ISO 200.
