Depends on the size of the softbox I suppose.
I have a 3x4' one that I use a great deal and my other light is an 18" beauty dish with diffuser on it.

I use them at the same time on high key.
Otherwise I use the big softbox as more or less fill and the BD as the main light. I've also used just the BD in a one light setup and often with a strip box w/ grid for rim light.
I used to use a 2x2' softbox, as I had one, but hated the square catch lights.
You can control on contrasy the light is by it's distance to the subjet, by the ratio of light as well - make the softbox and BD same reading and you get a fairly flat light, you can up the softbox and use the BD for fill, or vice versa.
