Why does the DSC-WX70 sometimes take only one shot in Superior Auto mode (aka in-camera HDR)?

I think you are slightly mislead, since Superior Auto is not exactly the HDR mode.

What Superior Auto gives you is automatic switching between all advanced modes (6-shots HHT, 3-shots HDR, 1-shot standard scenes, etc...). Using its artificial intelligence, it will select a different mode every time you take a picture.

If you are certain that you want to take an HDR (3 shots), you need to switch to the HDR mode.
