Given the kind of photography you do, I would suggest you pick up one of Nikon V1 Kits on clearence with 10-30 lense and add an 18.5 mm (50 MM equivalent) prime. I have V1 too and it would deliver on what you want. Fast focus, great video and with the 18.5 mm prime decent low light performance. V1 is on clearance right now for $299 IIRC.

For the two camera's you mention, we are talking apples versus oranges. The V1 would be much more versatile for your needs and give you a good intro to interchangable cameras on the cheap (especially now on clearance).

With respect to DSLR, the value is in the glass. The decision to go cropped sensor versus fx is easy in the Nikon world. With V1 you can always buy FX glass and use FT1 adapter eventually buying an FX body. Keep an eye on D700 seconds. Not sure if Cannon glass scales between cropped and FX and ES lines.
Others will chime in too but do some more digging before laying out cash.
