I did not have focus tracking enabled. Focus tracking on the GX1 is a specific AF setting (face detect, af tracking, 23-area, center, pinpoint).
I believe the setting you're talking about is called "fast AF" or something like that, where the camera will AF constantly during live view. I disabled that setting.
