After using my d800 for a few months this is what I've discovered:
My best option in to get a good, overall, exposure-- a well-distributed histogram.
If I overexpose, the results are difficult to work with. I rarely get a usable image if it was overexposed to begin with.
If I underexpose, even dramatically (as in the above samples), the images seem to be easier to correct in Lightroom 4. I also find I end up preferring the images that were underexposed (from an artistic standpoint).
I find myself consciously underexposing many shots, knowing I will get an effect I like.
