Settled on a Dell M4600
In reply to anim8tr, Dec 12, 2012

Thanks for everyone's help. I settled in on a Dell M4600 with the Intel i7-2760QM (Quad Core Processor) with a AMD FirePro M5950 1GB Video Card. Dell has a great 50% off deal until January 31st on the Precision M4600 and M6600 "mobile" workstations. It's not the lightest laptop around, but it will sit on my desk 75% of the time so not a big deal. I think this will cover my photo and video needs for a while...

Newsy,

I've got a separate (and color calibrated) IPS monitor I already use, so I'm not too concerned about the laptop screen.

I'm starting to look at the Dell Precision M6600 which is looking pretty good (you mentioned the M6700, but I've seen some good reviews on the M6600). It's currently on sale for $1400 off which makes me a bit suspicious. I think it came out in 2011, but maybe the new M6700 model will replace it? I can't make sense of that big sale price... over 50% off.

The M6600 is much more of a workhorse and better built than the Latitude I was looking at and comes standard with a i7 Dual Core processor and an AMD FirePro M8900 Video Card. It also has a LED backlit panel and RAID capabilities.

Thanks!

I can't speak to it. Its' never come across my radar before probably due that there is no option for an IPS tft LCD panel in its' screen.

I see the highest resolution is 1920x1080 which is good but the LCD Display options does not list a "1920x1080 Premier Color IPS RGB" option.

If I was editing color critical work I'd use this laptop with an external monitor, not stand alone. I see it has an HDMI port but not a Displayport which means you'll not be able to hook up to any of the 27" 2560x1440 or 30" 2560x1600 monitors but you can possibly get that option via the available E-Port docking station.
