No, MS is not doing fine. Not even the MS management believe that.

Look at their 10 year stock price:

They've been in the doldrums for a long time.

And now the charge toward smartphones and tablets risks leaving them marginalized and irrelevant. Now, maybe they will turn things round but, right now, things are looking very sticky indeed for MS.

Microsoft was failing miserably in the phone market.  They were losing market share of the portable market to the tablets. So why not come out with an OS that will tie all 3 markets together.  I assume that is what they were thinking.  They have a lot on the line here now.  Look at all the hardware vendors who have also bet the farm on this new OS.

If this thing flops I see HP selling their PC division and focus on their mini-frame and networking markets.  It sure helped IBM when they did the same.  Don't know what Dell will do, but they have already shut down all their domestic PC manufacturing and have outsourced the PC production.

I'm sure this issue will be corrected and things will get back to normal.  But if Microsoft doesn't come out with a new device that creates new market they will keep sliding in the future.  Look what this did for Apple when they brought out the iPhone.  That changed the company for the better. Microsoft needs something like that in a new product.
