Gaza's only fisherwoman

Madeline Kullab supports her sick father, mother and younger siblings by fishing.  At eighteen she has been fishing for several years, leaving school to earn money. The night we went to film with her she caught barely three kilos of sardines. Despite living in a rotting lean too house with leaking asbestos roof and no glass in the windows she has a gps machine. Given to her by an NGO to help her be sure she does not accidentally stray over the distance limit set by the Israelis. Once away from the shore and the sometimes hostile eyes of fellow fishermen, she takes off her long abaya so she can move more freely. Like Muhammad and other Gazan's she met, she loves the sea... it gives a sense of freedom and space in what is one of the most densely populated and troubled places on earth.

Muhammad Ismail, 18, does backbreaking work in one of the dozens of illegal tunnels between Rafah/Gaza and Egypt, bringing in goods that break the Isreali blockade. His father is sick and he is the main breadwinner in his family. Goaded into waking at five thirty in the morning for a 12 hour shift... by a mother who fears he will not come back. The tunnels are prone to frequent collapse. I was only filming for 20 minutes in his tunnel when part of it gave way plunging it's section into darkness. His story and that of Madeline was told in a long Newsnight report on 10/11/12. Reporter Tim Whewell, Producer Maria Polachowska. I filmed and edited.
