It's part of the shutter/sensor cleaning mechanism. It's a different kind of cleaning it does from time to time. No worries.
from what I understand this is not a part of the sensor cleaning process. From what I have read the camera automatically takes a shot like this every now and then to remap any dead or stuck pixels so that they dont show in your pictures.

NEX-7 & Sigma 30mm f/2.8
NEX-5 & 18-55 OSS
And a spare black 18-55
That is indeed the case. Speaking for the NEX-5R (I haven't tested this theory on earlier models and have always assumed they do the processing of the data acquired some time afterwards), the sensor is remapped immediately after the shutter has self-fired. I noticed a stuck pixel on mine, so I changed the camera's date to a month ahead and turned it off - immediately it did a power-off shutter cycle. On using the camera straight afterwards, thestuck pixel had already been mapped out.
DOH! Sorry about that, that is indeed the case. Mind had a brief lapse. For what it's worth, the sensor does do a cleaning after the mapping if you listen close.
Thank you for everything. so far the issue is not a problem but the procedure to do the mapping camera and sensor cleaning procedure followed thereafter. is that correct?
