Protective filters and image quality

In a way this reminds me of two audiophiles arguing which is the best of their respective $20,000 sound systems. It's all subjective. I remember reading within the last six months or so some testing done by a lens rental company on how scratches, etc. effected performance. It apparently mattered little.
