I hadn't thought of using a flash for my macro pictures previously. With the brand I was using before and a telephoto lens, I was able to take photos of flying insects rather well, but I had to have good sunlight. I like your idea of using a flash.

It's a very old idea, I can't take any credit for it.

The flash gives you an extremely short effective shutter duration (like 1/10,000 sec?), so you never get any camera motion blur. It also gives very consistent and predictable lighting. This setup requires very little mucking around with FEC down to 1:1. In my experience once you get past 1:1 things get weird and you need to use manual flash, but I haven't gone there yet with this setup. The 100L performs beautifully in AI Servo, and has transformed the way I do macro.
