Yes we had this discussion before. Thom worked diligently with complainers and ruled out some large number of those complains (as you say 80% were dismissed). But after he did all that work and all those false positives filtered out he reached a conclusion that between 10% to 40% of D800s produced before July were affected. He also stated that the S/N greater than 3055000 are most likely safe from the left-AF problem. I find it quite a balanced approach.

Well, tell me how Thom is selling more of his D800 books while maintaining a not-recommended rating on the camera itself. At least for me,  this alone raised his credibility by several notches. On the other hands, Nikon reps have all the incentives to downplay the problem and keep selling defective cameras to soccer dads.

I think we agree to disagree. I am still on the fence waiting for my next move in D600 game. I do not want to find myself  locked into the same situation as the forum member 'lock' (no pun intended). Please, forgive me for not playing in "Nikon roulette" with my $2000, at least not yet.
