Hi sean,
went to Canada for first time in October this year and loved it, flew into Calgary but spent almost all of my time visiting my sister in Cardston and as a result almost all of my sightseeing was in the Waterton Lakes national park about 160 miles to south of Calgary. This is the Canadian side of the peace park combining Waterton and Glacer national park on the US side. Fantastic scenery and wildlife condensed into a reasonably small area and allowing you the opportunity to enter the states if you want to. A trip to this area with an overnight stop would be well recommended (my first posts will give you an idea).
Calgary looks to be in the prairie flat lands with some local landscapes and attractive scenery which I am sure Punman will be able to give you more insight into, however if you're anything like me you'll want the mountains and lakes for the definitive Canadian experience. Weather will no doubt be an issue but here's a top ten photo locations list from an old guide and given by Ward Cameron who is a local to Calgary photographer. You can obviously google these locations for more info but they are in the Banff to Jasper areas from about 80 miles northwest of Calgary.
Mount Rundle.
Lake Louise.
Moraine Lake.
Takakkaw Falls.
Emerald Lake.
Crowfoot Glacier.
Bow Lake.
Maligne Lake.
Maligne Canyon.
Upper Kananaskis Lakes.
Hope this helps and gives you some ideas, I also hope you have the same fantastic experience I had when in Canada, I found the place and the people to be great. If you're stuck in Calgary on a bad weather day, looking at local sights and have an interest in outdoor pursuits then I found the Sportsmans Paradise store to be an eye opener and worth a visit when looking at malls.
