As others have said the focus assist light support was only added back again with the E-M5/E-PL5/E-PM2 cameras and FL-600R flash.

If you are into electronics you might be able to make this, which does work on the E-PL1: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/post/39307970

I was going to suggest that you could potentially hook into the shutter release mechanism to turn on a secondary light, but unfortunately, you have the E-PL1, which is the only Pen that does not support the wired shutter release.

In terms of articulating LCDs there are some devices that plug into the shutter release cable slot, and move both the LCD and the shutter release completely off camera.  There is the wired version by Yongnuo that I have: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Live-View-Wired-Remote-For-Olympus-E520-E420-E510-E410-/250858047390?pt=Camera_Camcorder_Remotes&hash=item3a684e079e.  Here is the review I wrote in September 2011: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/post/39307970.

If you just want the image, you can hook up various portable monitors that take composite video in to the A/V cable that came in your camera box.  Unfortunately where Olympus puts the cable makes it hard to use the shutter button on the Pens (fixed on the E-M5, goes back to the old position on the right grip on the E-PL5 and E-PM2). This is output only, and you would not be able to use the touch sensor on the LCD to shoot that is in the E-M5, E-PM2, E-PL5 and E-P3 cameras.  You can typically find these monitors made for car backup systems, and they need a 12 volt battery.
