Yes... at the moment... and the PowerShot G1X is absolutely tempting...

tempted to buy a compact like the Canon G15. (Had a G11; it was fun to carry/shoot with very good IQ.)

No compact will do what my D5100 can...

really? guess that depends on what you are willing to 'tolerate' (size/price/capability) as a compact...

it's true...

Up to ISO 3200... most compacts cannot compete with dSLRs (compare to D4, D5100, 5DMkIII):

PowerShot G11 could not...
PowerShot G12 could not...
PowerShot G15 could not...

Panasonic LX7 could not...

Nikon Coolpix P7700 could not...

but Canon's PowerShot G1X can...

however...

at ISO 6400+... even dSLRs (comparing to D4, D5100, 5DMkIII) start to show IQ degradation of sorts... each different from others, the lower models more degradation, the higher models less degradation...

ISO 6400+ is where PowerShot G1X hits its clear upper limits for IQ  and goes down from there...
@ ISO 12800+... forget it, for low end dSLRs and PowerShot G1X too...

(but then so do many lower model dSLRs, like D5100 (less so for top end models D4/5DMkIII), whereas all other compacts are already so bad for IQ that either ISO isn't available anymore, or image is pretty bad (useless)... you only need try all other prosumer integrated zoom compacts... there are none to be found... not even some mirrorless can keep up either, except the best/top models can... but not by much (and interchangables have lens optics advantage, not the integrated lens ones)

@ ISO 6400 PowerShot G1X vs D5100 vs 60D vs OM-D E-M5

@ ISO 6400 PowerShot G1X vs D5100 vs NEX-5N vs D3200

clearly advanced 'prosumer' bridge compacts like Canon's PowerShot G1X... have come a long way...

of course, as usual, if one wants to do '0cm macro' smaller sensored (smaller than 1.5" G1X) compacts cannot be beat...

...since I do NOT have the PowerShot G1X (I wish!, or a Powershot Pro1 X (doesn't exist; wished it had a 24mm FOV equivalent wide lens instead of long-ish 28mm of the G1X))... I ALWAYS go out with my current dSLR... (5DMkII)...

just for fun... compare to 'old' previous generation FF dSLRs (including mine):

@ ISO 6400 PowerShot G1X vs 5DMkII vs D3x vs A900 (large Mp models)
try also older lower Mp models: D700, D3s, V1, 1DMkIV, 7D...

no matter how you look at compacts... either their sensor is a compromise, or their lens is a compromise, or BOTH. that's the price for 'integrated compactness'.
