I wrote in another thread: 'I have two 4/3 lenses, the L1 kit, Leica D Vario-Elmarit 1:2.8-3.5/14-50 ASPH, and Zuiko Digital 50 1:2, both of which are manual only on my G1.'

On the OM-D AF is available with both lenses, and I wonder if someone could kindly explain the technical reason for the fact that it works with one camera and not the other.

It's not so much a technical reason: Panasonic simply did not build in the capability to autofocus those 4/3 lenses that lack the High Speed Imager AF specification into their first generation Micro Four Thirds cameras (G1, GH1, GF1).

The Four Thirds lenses that have the High Speed Imager AF specification, which are designed to focus with CDAF systems, are as follows:

Olympus 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 (with 1.1 firmware and later)
Olympus 40-150mm f/4.0-5.6 (with 1.1 firmware and later)
Olympus 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 (with 1.2 firmware and later)
Olympus 25mm f/2.8
Olympus 9-18mm f/4.0-5.6
Olympus 14-54mm f/2.8-3.5 II

Panasonic Leica D 14-50mm f/3.5-5.6
Panasonic Leica D 14-150mm f/3.5-5.6
Panasonic Leica D 25mm f/1.4 (with 2.0 firmware and later)

All of Panasonic's subsequent cameras and all of Olympus' Micro Four Thirds cameras are able to autofocus pretty much all Four Thirds lenses, however the performance of lenses without High Speed Imager AF may be inconsistent--both Olympus and Panasonic say this is an AF assist mode and they make no guarantees about accuracy or performance. My own experience tells me to shy away from the ones with mechanically coupled focus rings: this means the Olympus SWD lenses and the Sigma lenses. Anything else should be reliable though.
