One additional and much shorter tip: The night skies over DVNP are clear most of the time and are very dark all the time (there is a light dome from Las Vegas, but it's mostly blocked by intervening mountain ranges). If you have any interest in astronomy, I suggest bringing a telescope if you have one or at least binoculars.
On our last trip, we stayed at the Stovepipe Wells Lodge. It was Easter Week, which means a full moon. However, before the Moon rose I was spotting 7th magnitude stars from just beyond the edge of the dimly lit parking lot (the lodge also had yellow lights on the eaves). I didn't own a telescope at the time, but my 10x50 binoculars showed quite a bit. On my next trip, I will at at least bring some bigger binos, if not my small (5" dia) telescope.
