I'll just say that I tried powering on just now and was able to take my first photograph in less than a second after I flipped the power switch. I've never had to wait 2-3 seconds, so not really sure where that's coming from. I agree, it's measurably slower than a DSLR, but shorter than a second, in my informal tests.

It is very long and much, much longer than any mid-level and low-level DSLR I have used. Compared to a D4 it must seem like an eternity. In real life the whole moment can be lost in the time waiting for the camera to awake. I have missed many shots because of it. The number of seconds is less important than whether it is too long or short enough. It definitely isn't short enough. I just returned from a month in Nepal and on a few occasions I felt like throwing the camera against a brick wall because it was too slow to be ready to shoot and I missed something.

When possible, of course, I start the wake up process when I think something is about to present itself, but that isn't always possible. I realize most people here are accustomed to shooting landscapes and other things where very fast reaction isn't needed. I do need to react very quickly though. I doubt if Olympus will or can release a firmware update to speed things up a lot (unless it really is sensor cleaning that happens each time the camera comes out of sleep mode), but I sure hope they address this in future cameras since currently this spec is digicam speed.
