70-200 F4/G ED VR compared at close focus distances
Dec 10, 2012

I have been lurking here for some time but had no reason to post before.  I thought others might also be interested in whether the new 70-200 F4 lens will be useful for close up photography.  It focuses down to 1m, a magnification of 0.27x, which is enough for larger insects, especially with a crop body.  It could be more convenient than the 300mm f4 AFS, which is excellent for such uses.  Since I've just received my copy, I compared it's short range performance with the Cosina Voigtlander 180mm F4 apo-lanthar, the Nikon 70-300 f4.5-5.6/G VR, and the 105 f2.8/G ED VR combined with the TC1.7EII.  Then I combined the teleconverter with the 70-200 VR to compare it with the 300mm F4 AFS and the 70-300 VR at 300mm.  My overall conclusion is that it may well be convenient and useful, especially with a teleconverter, although only real-world experience will tell.  I have a summary of my amateur tests here:
