What's with imperial sensor size units?
Dec 10, 2012

Did I miss something in basic math in the 1980s?  What's with having having a fraction with a decimal point on the denominator that indicates the sensor size.  1/2.3" or 1/1.7"...yeah I get it but it is neither clear or intuitive.   Can't we just have a far less confusing metric number, a simple number with a decimal point indicating the imperial inch size, or even a proper imperial number like 9/32nds of an inch for instance.  Is this the standard everywhere, just a DPreview thing or a US/UK thing?

Perhaps I'm just missing something and there is a very good reason for these odd indicators of sensor size.  My initial reaction though is that it's a stupid system.
