I followed that evolution of advice over the past years - from must do, to not needed any more - but have noticed that in recent Canon user manuals the advice in the IS section is to manually disable it on a tripod.  Tells me that disabling IS on tripods is the best practice.  (Maybe tie a string on your tripod plate to remind you to do it.)
