Are you using single area focus mode? Have you tried the "Small AutoFocus Frame Size? for low contrast shots" Don't know if it will work, but it's worth a try.

I'd also turn DR correction off if you have it enabled to see if focus improves.

Would love to see a photo example or two, with EXIF data.
