I am a beginner, and want to do artistic and landscape photography. I always heard that one needs manual control for the most creativity. But I am reading here that a lot of people including artistic photgraphy shooters keep their camera in aperture priority mode most of the time.

What mode do you most often use, and why?

Thanks,

Hi Jim,

My camera is most often in M Manual mode. I use that and spot metering to set the exposure for a scene, usually exposing so that the highlights do not burn out. I like manual mode and spot metering because it is easy to adjust Aperture and Shutterspeed to balance the exposure and provide the depth of field that I want.

Next most often used is A Aperture priority, Actually I used to use A mode quite a bit because I wanted to control the depth of field. However this mode also means the camera automatic meter comes into play so I have to consider exposure compensation to get the right exposure. I am using A mode less and less now.

Then there is P program mode, often underrated. On my camera you can still adjust A or S in P mode and you still have to think about exposure compensation but this mode does mean that you can shoot images quickly not worrying about manual mode settings. If I am taking pictures of fast moving children I will often use P mode and adjust settings to be sure I have enough shutter speed to capture their motion.

Thank you Mark, another Manual preferrer!

Jim
