Prediction: What will be the future of photography?

Let us make  two other comparisons: timekeeping and audio equipment.

Since watches with quartz movement were introduced there was no improvement in watches for an average person. More accurate watches are surely technologically possible but few people need them. People willing to pay more can buy a radio controlled watch, which is more accurate, but often buy mechanical watches which are less accurate and will stop within two days when not wound or worn.

In audio the CD standard is over thirty years old and for most people it is the highest standard they ever listen to. Most music is recorded in higher standard, but usually it is distributed down- sampled: few people appreciate the quality of e.g. SACD.

There is not just a question what technology will be possible in the future but  also what the people will want.
