the captures are fine, but that's not the issue. If I'm shooting video or jpegs, then having an accurate LCD is essential for tweaked white balances or custom picture controls.

Understand what you mean to a degree with tweaking white balance and custom picture controls but this a well known thing about the D800 and I honestly think Nikon or newer Nikon dslr camera's. This has been pointed out lot's of times and from what has been said it's just a Nikon thing.
