Ok guys. Thanks for all the input. Looks like what I was asking is nigh impossible.

To clarify further, the very closest I can get due to the geography is approx. 50 metres.

I am not wanting the beetle to take up the entire area of the photograph, just for it to be reasonably sized. I am not at all familiar with all the jargon or theory so I will try to elaborate on my needs the best I can. Imagine an A4 sized photograph, I would like a single beetle (which in real life measures about 10mm up to 20mm across) to appear on that page to be about 5 to 10 mm across at least when I take the photograph from a distance of 50 to 100 m away.

I am not sure how I would work out the lens, zoom/magnification (and anything else) required. Can someone explain how I can work this out and possibly work through the problem explaining basic photography/optics concepts along the way so I will be able to do it myself in future?
