What will be the ideal RAW pp workflow?
6 months ago

My resources are Canon 5d3, Canon-proprietary DPP, Adobe Bridge/ACR/Photoshop CS6 plus Nik Software plug-ins. I have just migrated from Nikon D800. Though I love Nikon camera gear a lot, I had to make a tough decision to switch to Canon to be able to use Canon Tilt+Shift lenses for landscape photography.

I had been using Adobe Bridge/ACR/CS6 to process Nikon RAW files(neither ViewNX2 nor Capture NX2), which is a simple and seamless workflow for me. Now I need to come up with a new digital workflow. Tentatively, I am thinking of the following workflow:

Step 1: Import .CR2 files into Bridge, and then apply White Balance correction & DNG profile based on Color Checker Passport to correct colors in ACR;

Step 2: Maybe I execute DPP to process 16 bit TIFF converted by Adobe ACR just in case if I could enjoy Canon RAW-specific adjustments using DPP. I am not sure whether this Step 2 would be viable or not. In fact, the DPP seems to have a very limited capabilities to JPG and TIFF editing. In addition, I have to convert CR2 files to TIFF early on and move over to different softwares here and there. Consequently, the file size will be bigger and bigger.

Step 3: Open TIFF files edited by DPP at Photoshop for further tasks such as compositing the images,  focus stacking, panoramic photos, - - - , finally Smart Sharpening.

I would very much appreciate if you provide me with any suggested workflows or recommendations. Thanks.

Don
