The recommendations for a portrait lens seem to be 85mm to 135mm.

I am sure that that statement applies to the 35 mm cameras of old (or a full frame camera). At least that is what I learned 30 years ago.

On a D5100 the equivalent would be 50-90 mm range.

Are you planning on using flash a lot indoors? If so, the kit lens is fine with the slow apertures. If you want available light photography, then you will want a faster lens - maybe a prime.

For posed pictures indoors, the 50 might give a more pleasing background but for candid kids on the move the 35 might be easier to navigate. You could crop the edges later.
