You're not necessarily doing anything wrong, but maybe you should re-evaluate your expectations of this lens. The human eye adapts so fast that we tend to overestimate the available light. But the lightmeter never lies and there are so many indoor situations where f/2.8 will not save you. Maybe a fast prime can.
