Epson R3000 - working fine and then ascii characters printed out...

I have a new Epson R3000 printer that I made 4 prints with on 11x17 inch paper. It's on a wired network on a 1GB/100MB switch that's all within a few feet of the Windows 7 machine that I use for printing.
On the 5th print - from lightroom 4, I got a bunch of ascii characters printed at the top of the page (I was printing a photo of course), and then the printer froze. It wouldn't power down - eventually I had to pull the plug, pull the paper, and I tried it again. Same thing.
I talked to Espon customer support - they said take it off the network and use a USB cable. That seems a little harsh - one of the reasons I bought the printer was because of it's networking capability.
Does anyone have any experience with similar issues that can maybe shed some light here?
