no color profile in RAW

Well it seems pointless to -convert- from sRGB to aRGB in capture NX2 after the RAW file has been opened, as the gamut has already been limited/compressed into sRGB when opening the RAW file.
Not really...no data is actully changed, limited, or compressed regards color profile until you actually save it as a TIFF or JPEG. While working on the NEF...no change.
It's as pointless as changing an sRGB out of camera Jpeg to aRGB. Unless what I read about how this software works was wrong? The olympus RAW software doesn't set the color space upon opening the image which is why I was confused.
And neither does the Capture software unless you set it to in the preferences.
It appears for my use if I set in preferences to always open as aRGB will do what I need.Then the in camera jpegs are sRGB but the RAW files I see that are worth editing/printing etc are aRGB. And if I then need sRGB I can "down sample" the color space down.
The RAW file is not an image so there is no color profile...what you're working with on screen is a representation of the data with the color profile you ask for it to be displayed in. The color profile doesn't get backed in until you convert and save to an image format JPEG or TIFF. You can always go back to the NEF and still work in any color profile you wish...but your monitor needs to support it or your just seeing a representation.
I do understand how profiles work and which I need, tested the need for aRGB etc but thanks for the advice. I agree that unless someone knows that they do need aRGB they should just stick to sRGB.
True....and if you have the NEF you can always use what ever profile you wish at any time in the future.
