DP1 Merrill + Sunpak flash issue

When using a Sigma flash in Auto mode on a DP2M, it will normally sync down to 1/50th. It will go much lower in slow sync mode. So I suspect that using a generic flash manually is the problem. I believe slow sync will get it lower than 1/125th, but I'm not sure how much lower.
