It is not wasted time, it will let you decide for yourself which way you want to go. I did that for a few weeks with my D200, now I only shoot RAW. YMMV.

By the way, I also use Corel's AfterShot Pro. It is a great program.  You might find it intimidating at first, but you'll quickly learn it.
