There is no discussion that out-of-the-box, the D800E gives sharper images than a D800. Falk Lumo explains the difference very well in technical terms, which can be easily brought closely together with minor (and automated) post processing. Both the D800 and D80E are subject to de-mosaicing, which means pixels are averaged to a certain extend by definition. It depends on the subject whether a D800 when pushed to the limits gives more accurate results than a D800E (halos versus moire). When a D800E in general would provide better results than a D800, there would be no reason for Nikon to make a D800 camera. Nikon describes their use-case situation quite accurately. They behave different, and in 98% of the cases with proper post processing their results can be made the same. If the 2% of pictures make it worth the 300 to 700 (EU) difference is a personal situation, not a generic situation.
