Right now I'm looking at the Nikon D5100, Canon Rebel T3i and the Sony A57.

My highest priorities would be low light photography, portraiture (especially of my 3 year old niece) as well as overall responsiveness and (preferably) a camera that doesn't "feel" like a mid-range slr (or a high-end entry level slr). Overall, I'm just kinda tired of the Maxxum 5D's sluggishness, but I really love how solid it feels in my hands.

Given your shooting goals the d5100 would seem the clear winner between these 3 models.

For low light, the sensor and the use of an OVF just give it better performance by quite a bit.

For portraiture they'd all do well, but the Nikon has many more lenses to choose from than the Sony.  My two favorites on my APS-C would Sigma 50mm f1.4 (or the cheaper Nikon 50mm f1.8g) and the Nikon 85mm f1.8g (the f1.4 being too expensive to recommend for casual use).

See my plan (in my profile) for what I shoot with. See my gallery for images I find amusing.
