Nikon D3100 with ADL but no auto-bracketing? Makes no sense...

Yes... advancement in technology.

Bracketing was welcome and neccessary back in the film days .. because there wasn't the immediate feedback of results. But now... the cameras nail the exposure right most everytime ... well, mine do anyway. And when the camera doesn't quite get it right .. there's the HUGE latitude you have in dynamic range ... that allows you to tweak your shot the way you want in PP.
