Nikon D600 Auto D-Lighting and brightness

If this has been discussed before, apologies.
On my D7000 and D300s, if you set the D-lighting to Auto, the contrast and bightness was set automatically and the options for brightness/contrast were grayed out in the Picture Control settings.
This is different with the D600. Setting the D-Lighting to Auto still allows manual adjustment of the brightness and contrast. This was the same on the D300.
I always preferred the way the D300s and D7000 Auto D-Lighting took control of the contrast and brightness.
As a work around, I have created U1 with brightness set at 0, and U2 with brightness set at -1.
