Panny FZ200, Canon G15 or ?: low light horse shows in barn
Dec 7, 2012
Hello -

(Posted this in Open forum originally but didn't get any responses, hope it's ok to cross-post)

A friend of mine is interested in a new camera, primarly to shoot pictures (and possibly some limited video) of his wife's horse shows.

More info on shooting situation - she does English Riding:

- Mostly in barns so light challenging.

- Can get kind of close but still need some zoom (I'd guess 150mm to be adequate?)

- Horses are moving perpendicular to audience so need some autofocus speed.

Purchase requirements:

- Size not a massive issue, IE camera doesn't need to fit in jeans pocket.

- Doesn't want to go to an interchangeable system at this time (so don't recommend an OMD with a bunch of primes...)

- Budget around $500.

Given that, seems like the new Panasonic FZ200 with f2.8 zoom would be great, or the Canon G15. I explained to him he would probably have to shoot in burst mode and delete some shots, but I'd like to think he could still get a high rate of keepers with one of these? Does anyone have any real-world autofocus experience or sample shots? Is there another option I'm missing?
