The recent complaints have been about the A99's video. Tuck's a decent photographer, but he doesn't seem to have said much about the A99 video one way or the other.

Exactly. I just read the linked page; not one word about video.

The a99 is a wonderful still camera. Just 'meh' for video.

The funny thing is that before it came out, lots of people were screaming and crying it would be too much of a video camera and that Nikon was the only one for photo purists; now it happens to be a wonderful still camera, and the problem is that it's not a perfect video camera. I see some hysteria in all of this.

Funny, I was thinking something similar the other day.

It felt like it was just yesterday that people were screaming to keep video out of the A900/A850 replacement and that it has no place being there. That the replacement should be left for the purists. Then again, they were also screaming to keep the OVF too.

Now, people seem to have adopted the EVF and now do nothing but bitch about the video coming from the A99. They aren't complaining about the A99 being video equipped. They are now complaining the video quality isn't to their liking and some were even buying it for primarily video, leaving its photo capabilities play second fiddle. This all from a camera where many didn't want video to begin with and threatened to jump ship if they added video and an EVF. My have the tides changed in such a short span.

Sounds like you like to generalize and lump groups of people together. I personally bought it equally for video and stills. I wouldn't have even considered buying it if it didn't have video. You find anyone who didn't want the video function AND now are complaining about the video performance let me know. There are more than just two groups out here that were interested in the a99.

Sounds like you are taking personal offense at a comment where I didn't point any one person out. Maybe you are projecting?

You read too far into my comment.  It was observational only of what I have noticed when the forum was filled with rumors of an A900 replacement, what the opinions were then, and how quickly those opinions have suddenly changed (some by the same people) now that the camera is out.  First people don't want video, now people do.  People didn't want an EVF, now they can't take pictures without one.  I just found it interesting how quickly these views change.  It was the same with the A700 and A77.

My suggestion is to just back off and take a few breaths before feeling you need to harp on everyone else that has an opinion, or in this case, an observation from their perspective. I've been on this form for quite a while now, not including when I used to lurk around the forums before creating a username (not including other forums). I have seen people come and go as well as have seen how people say one thing just to change their opinion later. This would be the case with the EVF/OVF and video in our photo cameras.

There are more than two groups, that is true. But those few who complain, and complain loudly, are the ones that get noticed. Those that get noticed are the ones people tend view as the majority, which is not true. In actuality, those that have the highest satisfaction in their purchase are probably saying the least. Sadly, this means that the satisfaction rating of said products probably don't get any true justification because a lot of the noise is coming from the complainers whereas the happy owners have little to nothing to say and are, instead, out and about using their purchased item with a smile on their face.
