Hi Carolyn,
Thanks for taking so much effort to reply and of course thanks also for the beautiful pictures of Italy. I also love Rome and particularly Venice, which I prefer to visit in Winter (except Carneval) because it is fairly empty and has a particularly morbid atmosphere.
Personally I have not experienced the bustle and obstructions you described as due to some rude photographers, but then I would not punish myself by visiting the Louvre or Vatikan museums in Summer. It seems that most museums over here (at least in Germany) do not forbid photography in general but do demand that you check in any sort of bag. If this contains a DSLR it is 50/50 whether they allow you to take it in with you without the bag. Tripods are always no-go! Often you can buy a photo permission badge but must sign not to use the shots commercially. Churches did not normally care what you brought in, but this is changing, probably for obvious reasons.
Certainly there are more and more churches and museums banning photography than there used to be. If I know this in advance and don't see any valid reason for this it is a case for my S95. I can use it so quickly and unobtrusively that nobody notices or is obstructed in any way. Around me there will be dozens of others much more obviously taking photos with their cell phones.
Am I really doing something wrong by taking photos there? The photography ban for me means that I would never use pictures taken there commercially.
Cheers, Ralph
