Personally, I find that to be a fairly BS policy. They should post the file on their support site or on the M43 Joint site, the same as Panasonic and Olympus.
While they call it a firmware update, I suspect what is going on when the lens goes to the service center is they may check on and replace various parts (or they need to align the lens after doing the update).
