D300 Auto ISO Function/Behavior

Even if they are different cameras, the meter reading should be the same for the same scene. Put it another way, if the properly exposed on one is, say, 1/15 f/2.8 at 400 ISO, you should be able to set any other camera the same way and get a properly exposed image. If any auto function needs a different setting to properly expose the image, something funny is going on.
