Help! Shooting retirement dinner as a favor-- need advice.

Thanks, again, everone. I'll shoot raw and try to arrive early to get a feel for the place. I suppose you can guess this is making me a little nervous! My landscape subjects don't move, I can use a tripod, and their expressions never change, but the light does! This people photography seems to be just the opposite.
