Lens flare is not the problem it used to be back in the days of film. I shoot with a Tamron 200-500 and I have never had a flare problem. I usually shoot without the hood. However when I am at the Grand Canyon I always shoot with the hood on. Not because of flare, because it protects the lens in case I bump it up against the 3 foot high stone wall on the rim. Without the hood if I walk up to the wall with the camera by my side the lens can bang into the wall. With the hood on it still can bump into the wall but it will not damage the hood except maybe a tiny scratch.
