every one will tell you that he loves to take photos and he has lots of great pics. i have been taking photos with digital cameras since it started, i only got one DSLR camera and it was a canon, it did not take long for me to sell ( i needed the money ).

i want to get back and take some pics now and then, i have been looking at the d7000 for some time and i don't know if it is the camera to get.

i know that there's the d600 but i can not afford it.

i am planing to get a body only and getting the 50mm/1.8G lens. my problem is i know that the d7000 is a great camera for me as a beginner but i see that there is the d5100/d5200 cameras and i think, maybe since the d7000 was some what old then maybe the 5100 since it is new then it is the equivalent or even better then the d7000?

i am not looking to take pics of weddings or sports or wild life, i just want to take pics from time to time.

yes pics can be taken with lots of cheaper cameras ( sorry for saying even the iphone ) but the photos with an dslr are more crisp and clearer when you crop them.

your input please.

You clearly have specified that you "won't" be taking photos of weddings, sports or wild life, and since you are talking about getting a G lens, then you clearly do not need the D7000 with the built-in motor where you can use older D lenses.

For taking photos "from time to time" you should be okay with a lower less expensive model, but de get good lenses and an external flash.  PLEASE, invest on the external flash.

And no, the "technology" and capability in the D7000 is not old.  I will say that maybe in around five years more there will be something else that will make this camera old for what WE use it for, but certainly not for YOUR application.
