Well, I sometimes shoot runners (Parkrun) in English light with a 1D Mark IV, and if I use auto exposure, my starting point is -1/3st, and frequently -2/3st.  However, many of my set of runners have taken to running in day-glo fluorescent tops/vests etc. and I've found that using Manual can give more consistent results - providing that the sun and clouds behave.  Have never used Nikon, so can't comment.
