When using the XP1 you may find easier to use the OVF in this situation. Exposure-wise - give it a stop or two more exposure.
With the X100 - this has probably the best flash available for fill-in right now. It is close to the lens axis and is very well balanced - try some with the flash dialed back 1/3rd - 2/3rds.

The sky is full of holes that let the rain get in, the holes are very small - that's why the rain is thin.
